Spearfishing fins are purpose-built for silent, efficient underwater movement — designed to cover distance with minimal effort, conserve oxygen during long breath-hold dives, and give you the control and positioning needed to close in on fish without disturbing them. Unlike freediving fins optimised purely for depth, spearfishing fins balance propulsion efficiency with durability, manoeuvrability, and resistance to the demanding conditions of reef, kelp, and open-water hunting environments.

Blade Material — What to Choose for Spearfishing

Carbon Fiber — Maximum efficiency and minimum kick effort. Ideal for long dives, deep water, and experienced hunters. Fragile in rocky reef environments — handle with care

Fiberglass (Composite) — The most popular choice for spearfishing. Durable, efficient, and responsive across a wide range of conditions — reef, open water, and kelp beds

Polymer / Technopolymer — Entry-level and travel-friendly. Resistant to impact, affordable, and a strong first fin for beginner spearfishers entering the sport

Bi-material / Rails — Composite cores with reinforced rubber or plastic rails for added blade tracking and durability during contact with reef and structure

Choosing the Right Stiffness for Spearfishing

Stiffness choice for spearfishing is slightly different from pure freediving — spearfishers often need short bursts of acceleration to chase fish, change direction quickly, and hold position in current, which favours a slightly stiffer blade than a depth-focused freediver of the same weight might choose. That said, the core principle remains: a blade that is too stiff will fatigue your legs on long dives and waste oxygen. Match stiffness to your body weight and the type of diving you do most — reef and shallow water hunters can go softer, while open water and blue-water hunters chasing pelagic species in current benefit from a medium-hard to hard blade.

Soft — Lighter divers, shallow reef, long relaxed dives, minimal current

Medium — Best all-round choice for most adult spearfishers across varied conditions

Medium-Hard — Stronger divers, open water, moderate current, active chasing

Hard — Powerful divers, blue water, strong current, short explosive dives

Blades vs. Full Fins

Many spearfishing shops and retailers sell as blades only — separate from foot pockets. This allows divers to pair their preferred blade with the foot pocket that best suits their foot shape and fit preference. At our shop we have separate categories for Blades Only and Complete Fins. If you are buying blades only, ensure you also select compatible foot pockets — contact us before ordering if you are unsure about compatibility, and we will advise on the correct pairing for your foot size and blade model.
