Fins are the most performance-critical piece of equipment in underwater hockey — determining your speed across the pool floor, your ability to accelerate after a sprint, your agility in close-contact situations, and how quickly your legs fatigue during a long match. Unlike scuba or freediving fins, UWH fins must meet specific safety requirements under CMAS rules — and the design choices that suit hockey play are quite different from those that suit open water diving.
CMAS Safety Rules for UWH Fins
All fins used in CMAS underwater hockey competition must comply with the following:
Material — Fins must be made from flexible, non-dangerous pliable material. Fibreglass fins are permitted but must have full rubber coating and edging to prevent injury during contact
Edges — All blade edges must be smooth and rounded — no sharp edges, exposed blade tips, or rigid surfaces that could cause injury
Carbon fins — Permitted only with a full rubber or silicone safety coating and edging — bare carbon blades are not allowed in competition
Blade Length — Short vs. Long for UWH
Blade length in underwater hockey is a genuine tactical choice — not just a size preference. Shorter blades (40–48 cm total) are more agile, generate faster kick cycles, and allow quicker direction changes — making them popular with attacking players and those who rely on speed and manoeuvrability. Longer blades (50–60 cm) generate more sustained thrust per kick and are favoured by players who need to cover more ground, hold defensive positions, or play in a more physical style. Most new players start with a medium-length blade and adjust based on how their position and playing style develop.
Blade Material — What to Choose
Rubber — The most durable and forgiving option. Okay performance, lower price point, and no risk of blade damage in contact situations. Ideal for beginners, junior players, and club training
Fiberglass with rubber coating — The most popular competition choice. Lighter and more responsive than pure rubber, with full safety edging for CMAS compliance. Best balance of performance and durability
Carbon with rubber coating — Maximum efficiency and lightest possible weight within CMAS rules. Reserved for experienced, competitive players — more expensive and requires careful handling
Stiffness by Player Profile
Extra Soft / Soft — Lighter players, beginners, junior athletes, and those with limited ankle flexibility. Reduces injury risk and builds technique naturally
Medium — The safest all-round starting point for adult club players. Works across positions and playing styles while the swimmer develops preference
Hard / Very Hard — Powerful, heavier players with strong ankle drive and refined kick technique. Sprint-focused attackers and physical defenders benefit most
