Underwater rugby fins are one of the most physically demanding fin applications in all of underwater sport — used in a full-contact, game played throughout the water column, where explosive acceleration, rapid direction changes, and sustained power output across a full match are all required from the same pair of fins. Choosing the right UWR fin is critical: too soft and you lose propulsion in contested situations; too stiff and your legs fatigue before the final period.
CMAS Safety Requirements for UWR Fins
All fins used in CMAS underwater rugby competition must comply with safety regulations designed to protect players during contact play.
No harmful projections — All potentially harmful protruding edges must be covered or removed. Blade rails, tips, and foot pocket hardware must be flush and smooth
Foot pocket — Must be closed heel — no open heel straps, exposed buckles, or gaps where fingers or hands could be caught during contact
Brittle materials — If carbon or hard composite material is used, it must be encased or coated to prevent injury from breakage during play
Fin retainers — Fins may be secured with fin retainers to prevent loss during contact — recommended for all competition use
How UWR Fins Differ from Other Sport Fins
Underwater rugby fins are purpose-designed for a specific combination of demands that no other sport places on a fin simultaneously. They need the explosive sprint capability of a short-to-mid length blade to accelerate through the water column, the durability to withstand regular physical contact with other players and the pool environment, and the safety construction required under CMAS rules. The standard blade length for UWR fins is 45 cm — shorter than most freediving or finswimming fins, giving players the agility and kick speed needed for the dynamic, contact-heavy nature of the game.
Blade Material for UWR
Fiberglass / Composite Fiber — The most widely used material in competitive UWR. Excellent balance of power, durability, and safety compliance. Blades are pressed under high pressure for maximum thrust efficiency and shaped with water rails to reduce turbulence and improve blade tracking
Carbon Fiber — The premium competition option. Lighter and more responsive than fiberglass — delivering greater power output per kick for elite players. Must be coated to comply with CMAS safety rules — available in competition-ready format from WaterWay
Rubber — Durable, affordable, and highly forgiving. Ideal for beginners, junior players, and training use where fin longevity under contact conditions is the priority
Choosing Stiffness for Your Position
Stiffness in UWR fins directly impacts sprint speed, endurance, and playing style. Unlike freediving, where a softer blade is often preferred for oxygen conservation, UWR players typically benefit from a stiffer blade — the game is played in short explosive bursts with recovery periods, which suits higher stiffness levels than continuous-effort sports. However, players new to the sport or with less leg strength should always start at medium before moving to hard.
Soft — Beginners, junior players, lighter athletes entering the sport
Medium — Club players, intermediate level; best all-round starting point for adult UWR players
Hard — Experienced players with developed technique; faster sprint acceleration and more power in contested ball situations
Extra Hard — Elite competition use; powerful athletes with refined UWR-specific kick technique and strong leg drive
Featured Brand — WaterWay Fins
WaterWay is the world’s most widely used fin brand in competitive underwater rugby. The WaterWay Rugby Fins — is the standard against which all UWR fins are measured. Available in fiberglass and carbon versions, with four stiffness options (Soft, Medium, Hard, Extra Hard) and a 45 cm blade length, WaterWay Rugby Fins are used by national teams and club players at every level of the sport globally. Both models feature purpose-designed water rails for turbulence reduction, smooth safety edging for CMAS compliance, and high-pressure pressed blades for maximum thrust efficiency.
