Frontal (Centre Mount) Snorkel — Mounts centrally on the forehead and points straight forward along the body axis. Semi-Dry Snorkel — Features an angled splash guard or louvred cover at the top that reduces surface splash entry without sealing the tube on descent. A practical option for recreational snorkellers and surface swimmers in rough open water where waves regularly wash over the snorkel. Slightly more breathing resistance than a J-type
Dry Snorkel — A float valve at the top automatically seals the tube when submerged — preventing any water entry. The most comfortable option for casual snorkellers who dislike clearing water. Not suitable for freediving, spearfishing, or sport use — the float valve creates drag on descent, adds resistance on inhalation, and can malfunction under pressure at depth
Why Spearfishers Choose J-Type Only
Dry and semi-dry snorkels have moving parts — float valves, splash guards, and purge valves — that add weight, drag, and breathing resistance. On a breath-hold dive, every millilitre of dead air space and every gram of resistance matters. A J-type snorkel with a large-bore tube (20–25 mm internal diameter) allows maximum airflow for efficient surface recovery breathing between dives — critical when you need to fully ventilate and relax before the next descent. A snorkel should always be removed from the mouth before every dive — a simple clip or keeper that releases cleanly is more useful than any valve mechanism.
Why Finswimmers Use Frontal Snorkels Only
In finswimming, the body position is fully horizontal and streamlined — head down, spine neutral, kick driven entirely from the hips. A traditional side-mounted J-type snorkel forces asymmetric drag on the head and requires the neck to turn for breathing, breaking the streamlined position and disrupting the kick cycle. A frontal snorkel eliminates both problems — it sits centrally on the forehead, points forward along the direction of travel, and allows breathing without any head movement whatsoever. This is why frontal snorkels are used exclusively in finswimming training and surface competition events — they are not optional equipment but a fundamental requirement of efficient pool technique.

Bore diameter — 20–25 mm internal diameter for freediving and spearfishing — wider bore means more airflow and faster recovery breathing between dives
Flexible tube — A soft silicone or TPE section between barrel and mouthpiece moves with your head rather than fighting it — important for spearfishers tracking fish
