Open Cell vs. Closed Cell
The single most important distinction in freediving wetsuits is the interior construction — open cell or closed cell neoprene. A 3mm open cell suit is warmer than a 5mm closed cell suit. Yamamoto Neoprene
Yamamoto neoprene — produced by Yamamoto Corporation in Japan — is the premium neoprene material used in high-end freediving wetsuits worldwide. Unlike conventional petroleum-based neoprene, Yamamoto is produced from limestone (calcium carbonate), resulting in a material that is lighter, more flexible, and less buoyant than equivalent petroleum neoprene — all critical advantages for freediving. Camouflage Patterns
Spearfishing wetsuits are produced in camouflage patterns specifically designed to break up the diver’s outline when viewed from below, above, and laterally by fish at close range. Camouflage pattern design for spearfishing is a specialist field — patterns are developed for specific habitat types and have been rigorously tested against the visual system of fish rather than the human eye. Common pattern categories include blue water / pelagic patterns (blue and black gradients for open water), reef patterns (brown, green, and grey for rocky reef and kelp terrain), and sand patterns (beige, cream, and tan for sandy bottom hunting). Open Cell Wetsuit
Open cell wetsuits must never be pulled on dry — the unlined interior will tear under friction. Before donning, flood the interior of both jacket and trousers with a mixture of water and hair conditioner, dedicated suit lubricant, or a few drops of baby shampoo diluted in a bucket of water.
