Open Cell vs. Closed Cell
The single most important distinction in freediving wetsuits is the interior construction — open cell or closed cell neoprene. An open cell suit has a raw, unlined neoprene interior — the material is porous and clings directly to the skin, trapping a thin layer of water and body heat and creating a thermal seal that significantly outperforms a closed cell suit of the same thickness. A 3mm open cell suit is warmer than a 5mm closed cell suit. This is why virtually all serious freedivers and spearfishers wear open cell suits — not because of price or status, but because the physics of the construction make them demonstrably and measurably warmer for the same neoprene thickness.
Open cell neoprene — Raw unlined interior. Clings to skin and creates a direct seal — minimal water exchange keeps body-warmed water in contact with the skin. Closed cell neoprene (double lined) — Nylon lining bonded to the interior face. Easy to don dry without lubricant. More durable and resistant to tearing. One-Piece vs. Two-Piece
Two-piece suit (jacket + long john / trousers) — The standard configuration for freediving and spearfishing. The jacket — typically with an integrated hood — overlaps with the high-waisted long john trousers at the torso, creating a double layer of neoprene over the core where thermal protection is most critical. The double-layer core is significantly warmer than a single-piece suit of the same nominal thickness. Yamamoto Neoprene
Yamamoto neoprene — produced by Yamamoto Corporation in Japan — is the premium neoprene material used in high-end freediving wetsuits worldwide. Unlike conventional petroleum-based neoprene, Yamamoto is produced from limestone (calcium carbonate), resulting in a material that is lighter, more flexible, and less buoyant than equivalent petroleum neoprene — all critical advantages for freediving.
